Names:

Tansy is also classified as Chrysanthemum vulgare (L) Bernh.

History:

An old name for Tansy is arthemisia domestica, since it was rubbed into meat to repel flies in the Middle Ages.

Traditional use is as an insecticide.

Constituents:

Essential oil, comprising thujone (to 70%) and borneol; vitamin C; tannins; resin; citric acid;butyric acid; oxalic acid; lipids.

Uses:

Use the fresh or dried flowering stems. Antihelmintic;insecticide;emmenagogue.Treatment (small doses) for roundworms.Digestive aid.Can be used in infusion as a gargle in gingivitis.

A former use for extracted oil of Tansy was an external rub for rheumatic pain.Useful for repellant sachets and scented articles.


Contra - Indications

Large doses are an irritant.

Do not use during pregnancy. Risk of miscarriage.
